CPT: human costs of their management

We will never accept the fact that everyday we have update the tragic bullettin of the war on migrants that is brought into act via detention inside detention centres through out Italy. We will never get used to human costs linked to the management of such places.
Five years passed by from the day during which six migrant citizens died inside Trapani’s detention centre as a consequence of fire, of a protest but unfortunately the system of cpts has gone worse, also thanks to new laws. Revolts, ecapes and protest have kept happening as well as the unfairness of the detention of people that are not guilty of any crime, they are in fact victims of law and global politics that pretend that migrants are exploited, rightless and voiceless.
In Bologna a new protest, a new rebellion act against detention ended up in violent beatings that seems to show that police pretended to prove their strength in accordance with the manager of the place. In Milan another fact shows everyone how Bossi-Fini law is dangerous, because of its mechanisms Bossi-Fini law manages to allow what is not written in its own text: a citizen that is regularly staying in Italy is being detained in via Corelli’s detention centre.
This story that became public thanks to the synergistic work of Ass.ne Ya Basta! In Milan and of Razzismo Stop in Padova highlights how the entire detention system goes especially from the point of view of police controls in the territory, which comes before migrants’ detention and repatriation.
We are confirmed what we already were afraid of in regards of law 271/2004. This law approval we go back to a situation that is precedent to Cassation court’s sentence on Bossi-Fini law inconstitutionality: justice of peace simply does not guarantee to migrants the right to defence, it just automates and legitimises a bureaucratic machine that make the right to defense impossible.
Within few hours any migrant citizen – it does not matter whether he/she holds papers or not – can be taken away from his/her life and can find him/herself detained or ordered expulsion, without being able to get hold of a lawyer and prepare self-defence before the audience takes place at justice of peace.

Next Saturday December 4th there’s to be demonstration against Bossi-Fini law in Rome and one of the main topics brought in the streets is the closure of all detention centres. We do not want to accept that these places exist, we believe that entering and monitoring detention centres is important but it is also important to support and enlarge networks, initiatives, campaigns, actions to demand that these out-law non-places.

Melting Pot is an information and communication project and it therefore will keep referring of all initiatives that are to develop through out Italy and Europe towards next European day of action against detention centres, this second European day is to be April 2nd 2005.
